Nature of Tribal Societies

The nature of tribal societies:

  • Tribal people came from vastly different backgrounds.However, there are some deep beliefs and practices which characterise most tribal people.
  • Their lives are closely interwoven with nature. They worship nature believe that all life on Earth is inter-related.Tribal society has deep respect for all life forms including plants.
  • They believe in sharing all resources equally among all members. Even today,when the Mullakurumba adivasis of south India go hunting,a share is given to every family in the village.
  • Tribal societies are usually egalitarian,i.e they believe in the equality of all members .Some tribal societies ,however ,like the Gonds , have highly stratified social structure.
  • Ties of Kingship or family relationships ,are very strong among members of a tribe .
  • Social evils like slavery and caste -based discrimination are generally absent .widow  remarriage is encouraged.
  • The positions of the ruler is not hereditary, unlike in non-tribal societies.
  • Unlike non tribal societies which have a complex and interrelated economic exchange system,tribes tend to form self -sufficient economic units.
